I feel very lucky that after meeting Anna, I was able to play a part in her recovery. I soon learned that eating disorders can be extremely isolating and frightening illnesses, both for sufferers and those who care for them. However, through Anna, I saw how vital it is for sufferers to talk about how they are feeling. Although it isn’t always easy to discuss your feelings, it is important to be able to share them and place your trust in someone who listens and understands. This could be a friend, relative, counsellor, partner or even schoolteacher.

The most important thing that I would like to say is that you must never lose hope. I have seen Anna slowly recover and know that it is possible but it does require patience and understanding. The most important thing I have learned is that eating disorders are extremely dangerous illnesses that no one actually wants and that the sufferer is fighting their own internal battle against it all the time. You need to work with the sufferer against the disorder rather than against the sufferer herself.
